Botanical Recombinants
2008 - present

Botanical Recombinants
Nature provides humans with all they need to sustain themselves, food, water, materials for shelter, and medicinal remedies. Flora is around everyone, everywhere, all though the varieties may vary from geographical locale to locale. Botanical gardens were created to provide scientific research, conservation, display, and education about plants and their environments. The idea of "scientific" gardens explicitly used for the study of plants dates back to antiquity. I have been photographing botanical gardens and flora in various states and countries when I travel.

With the current state of climate change, I have decided to create visual recombinants of various plant life, restructuring their forms and beauty into layered re-interpretations; creating plants with new visual traits. Sometimes the layers peel away or wind around each other, notating the cycle of growth and death. I invite the viewer to slow down, investigate this constructed nature, and consider its value.

Requiem for the Innocents

On May 24, 2022, a mass shooting occurred at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, United States, where nineteen students and two teachers were fatally shot, while seventeen others were injured but survived. The senselessness of this mass shooting and many, far too many others that have followed or proceeded this event, numb the mind. How can we allow this to happen over and over again?

Exquisite Simplicity

I am drawn to the beauty and transitory existence of plants and flowers as metaphors for the human condition. Biological cellular processes create the balance between the similarities and uniqueness of each stem, petal, bud, and blossom. Photographically, I can accent the details through lighting and depth of field. I can focus the viewer’s attention on the visually interpreted growth, decay, or beauty of form and color. I capture these images in simple settings such as my enclosed patio or garage floors using only natural light sources.
