Vestiges: Loss and Reclamation
Framed in reclaimed second-hand store frames, the overtly ornate floral arrangements echo the 17th-century Dutch stilleven, memento mori and vanitas paintings, which were painted to remind the viewer of the tentative fragility of human existence in a religious age.
These contemporary interpretations bear the accuracy of the photographic trace, serving as momentary references to our current circumstances. Today we exist in “unprecedented times,” as many have stated. We have witnessed over two years of a pandemic, devastating wildfires, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, political division, and violence by humans.
We need to reclaim and sustain our humanity.
