Indications of Recovery

Disruptive Surrender

Abstraction allows for a broader interpretation of an artwork's context. Disruptive Surrender is a reaction to being diagnosed with cancer and subsequent chemotherapy. Along with surfacing: 62+4, an earlier photographic interpretation of my experience, Disruptive Surrender is an off-kilter world that swirls with unknowns while simultaneously marking the tests and procedures that became routine, the minutia involved in tracking and measuring a disease. These artworks are a continuous process seeking a physical and mental equilibrium. They may create an entirely different reaction in the viewer, which is equally valid.

Surfacing: 62 + 4

A surface can be a protection, a façade, a layer, or a texture. Surfacing from the depths involves calibration and re-calibration until the body reaches equilibrium. So how does a person react to, absorb, and succumb to the treatment used to affect one's being on a cellular level? Created from images of icy, frosted surfaces on a window to dander collected from the skin residue of pets, the collaged images are a reaction to being diagnosed with cancer and the subsequent chemotherapy regime – surfacing: 62+4 is a continuous process seeking a physical and mental equilibrium.
